The Importance of Discrepancy

The change equation: perception + discrepancy = intrinsic motivation. The teaching science Kelly geeks out on.

In a continuing-education coaching call, we talked about how to better serve our students — and about the “change equation”: perception + discrepancy = intrinsic motivation.

Motivation starts with perception: when we can clearly perceive where we are now (point A) and where we are CAPABLE of going (point B), that distance is discrepancy — and clearly understanding our potential strengthens our intrinsic motivation. Not numbers math — staying-motivated-to-reach-your-goals math. Yes, this is the kind of stuff I geek out on.

We also covered deepening body awareness — body awareness is choosing where to put attention in the body; attention is selection, which alters neural activity — and the Pygmalion Effect: as your teacher, I can help maximize your experience simply by holding positive expectations about you and your capabilities. So cool, so empowering.
